Community PV-Project Makes Turkish Crops Flourish
İslihisar is a small village of 60 houses and 250 inhabitants in the central Anatolian province of Karaman. The people of slihisar make a living farming. The crops grown are wheat, barley, sunflower, bean and chickpea. Irrigation is essential for crop production in this area. The Karaman region is home to 38 water co-operatives with 665 water wells supplying approx. 33,000 hectares of arable land and nearly 6,000 farmers.
Since the water needs to be pumped up from about 50m-depth, supplying water requirements is also a huge matter of expense. slihisar alone has spent about €200,000 a year to apply water to its
fields. High costs and the fact that the region is gifted with high solar irradiation jump-started the idea for a solar PV installation to power the water pumps.
So the farmers of the slihisar water co-operative broke ground on a pilot plant with financing from the EU. The photovoltaic system with 105 kWp started operation in 2012. It stretches over 2,000 m2 of farm land and supplies a 50 kW water pump. In a second step it will be connected to the grid to meet the electricity needs of the village as well.
The İslihisar villagers, with Ali hsan Kutbay and Şevket Çiçek leading the way, showed courage by moving in a new direction by operating the first efficient solar PV plant in the region. The project has boosted local investor interest and drawn the attention of other water co-operatives in Karaman. Their courage will inspire others to join them on the path to decentralized, renewable and affordable energy supply in.
